My Woodlarks Journey

I have been honoured to be involved with Woodlarks since the early 1970s. I was introduced by Mick Lewis, before he and Sue became the Warden and Secretary of the campsite.

My first introduction to camping was through NASCH and Pioneer 2 camps, where I provided one-to-one support. I eventually became part of the kitchen crew for them and for several schools. As younger and fitter volunteers took over the kitchen duties for NASCH and Pioneer 2, I have continued running the kitchen with a small team of friends for several smaller school camps and helping out where needed.

It is always a joy to see any camper experiencing freedom, independence, confidence or achieving something for the first time — however young or old.

Woodlarks never stands still; something is happening all year round! When the campsite isn’t in full swing during the summer camping season, there are working parties attended by fantastic volunteers throughout the closed season, carrying out vital maintenance on the buildings and grounds — which I also help with.

At Christmas, we run a grotto for children who can’t always visit Father Christmas on the High Street due to health or other challenges. I’m involved in setting up and taking down the grotto, as well as helping during the week itself — it’s definitely the Magic of Christmas

Woodlarks, to me, is one big family. Everyone involved — camper or volunteer — helps make it the wonderful, magical place that it is.

A Little About Me

I was lucky enough to have very forward-thinking parents who encouraged me to strive. I attended the university of life — and I’m still learning!

I had a varied working life, mainly working for Local Authorities - and the majority of it working with and helping young people

Since retiring in 2012, I enjoy life to the full and as well as being an active member of the Management Committee, I also volunteer at my local farm, theatre, and community centre.
