Mac’s Story

Mac’s Story

Belonging through doing: how practical learning at Woodlarks helped Mac thrive!

Mac goes to a very special school – a place for learners with a primary diagnosis of autism. Many of his friends at school have a negative experience of education, which has an adverse effect on their self-esteem. Mac is socially vulnerable, but he yearns for a real sense of belonging.

Mac struggles with traditional forms of education, but he really benefits from practical, real-life learning. Unfortunately, many businesses and work experience programmes are unable to provide for these learners because of their social, educational and behavioural needs. However, Woodlarks campsite can!

Woodlarks has staff and volunteers who are highly experienced in working with learners with SEMH (social, emotional, and mental health difficulties) and SEND (special educational needs and disabilities), and this has enabled Mac to enjoy attending every week. The programme has provided him with respect, praise and understanding, which makes him feel worthwhile. He has been delighted to find that his work can help to support other vulnerable people.

Mac has been able to put in a full day of alternative education because he feels trusted and that his work has both purpose and value. He has learnt to use tools safely, built working relationships with the coaches as well as his peers. Mac can see the difference that his efforts are making on the campsite week by week, and he is beginning to feel valued, proud and trustworthy.

Woodlarks feels privileged to be able to work with young people like Mac and honoured that they want to come here to work. We are seeing their pride in their new responsibilities and are grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of their growth and their future employability. The learners win by gaining skills for their futures – the school wins by having safe work experience placements – and Woodlarks wins by getting important jobs done!
